Western Counties v Eastern Counties 9th February 09
Bristol Sporting Club Dinner Show, Grand Thistle Hotel Bristol, Monday 9th February 2009
Bristol Sporting Club, being the major sponsor of the Western Counties ABA hosted their first dinner show of 2009. The driving rain and snow was no match for the determination of Eastern Counties, Western Counties and the many sponsors who turned up to a splendid dinner and 11 bouts of scintillating boxing.
Western Counties, led by Coach Les Brooking, edged out Eastern Counties (4-3) in the 7 official bouts with wins for:
1. Liam Horgan
2. Ryan Hart
3. Joe Wilcox
4. Sam Pomphrey
The Eastern Counties winners:
1. J Shermer
2. D J Perry
3. P Vinehall
The high standard and total commitment of the boxers was greatly appreciated by all of the guests and the matchmakers should be praised for their skilful work prior to the event It also represents a positive return for Trevor Benville-Scott (chairman) and his fellow officers of the Bristol Sporting Club. They have provided support for the sport since 1967 and were tempted to develop a closer working relationship with the Western Counties ABA. With well-matched bouts the Sporting Club is then in a position to attract even greater attendance at shows which, in turn, provides increased sponsorship into the sport.
The Bristol Sporting Club has already sponsored the Western Counties Annual Coaching Conference on 8th January and is committed to a further three dinner shows this year. Their sponsorship also provides support to our monthly squad training (men and women) the result of which is a steady rise in the standard of boxing throughout the region.
Our four supporting bouts were also hotly contested:
Mike Rose outpointed Dan Sarkozi; Mike Freeman beat Colum Siddon on a retirement through injury; Tom Sage beat Craig Ryder and finally James Thompson beat Frances Lynn.
Les Brooking confirmed that further matches are scheduled this season:
Midland Counties (away)
Guernesy (away)
Midland Counties (Home)
Eastern Counties (Away).
Our special thanks to Eastern Counties ABA for defying the weather and providing excellent opposition and to the Bristol Sporting Club for their continued help and support.
