Male Squad this weekend 7th February Bristol
Male squad training this weekend for all Juniors and Seniors boxers over 10 bouts.(If you have a boy under 10 bouts who you feel has potential and would benifit please contact Kevin Hay)
The boxing scoring computer will be set up for coaches and boxers to see how it works, and a must for all. If you are a coach who does not have a boxer attending you are still welcome to come and learn.
Remember ALL championships in Western Counties will be computer scoring for the rest of this season.

Coaching course , Full and Assistants course January 2010 may be cancelled due to lack of support.
There have been only a few applications for the course being run at Broadplain Bristol on 2nd/3rd and 16th/17th January, if you have not applied and want a place please get your application forms into Kevin Hay as quick as possible.Closing date extended to 19th December.
If there are no more applications it will be cancelled, and the Advanced coaches who run the course can have 2 whole weekends off!!!
Don't ask for extra coach courses if you can't support them, when they are put on.

Coaching consultation your chance to shape future
Coaching consultation - your views sought
The ABAE is conducting a large-scale coaching consultation seeking the views of as many people as possible on the existing coaching system and the developments and support for coaches that people would like to see in the future.
We would like to encourage feedback from as many people as possible as the responses will inform future coaching developments and will help us to ensure that coaches' needs are at the heart of what we do. This is your chance to influence what we do in the coming years.
Once the consultation has been completed a report will be produced based on the feedback received.
The deadline for returning completed questionnaires is Thursday 30th April.
If you wish to complete the form electronically you will need to open it, save it as a file on your PC, and email it to matthew.williams@abae.co.uk when completed.

Western Counties Coaching Seminar 11th January 09
Above, Kevin Hickey making presentations on behalf of Western Counties to Kurt Ernest and Alan Brightman.
Thank you to all of you who attened the coaching seminiar today at Bristol. For those of you who couldn't make it below follows a brief outline on what you missed.
The individual attendance was in excess of 80 people and the feedback by telephone has been extremely encouraging and asking “when is the next one?”
Richie Woodall set the scene with a clear and unequivocal outline of the requirements to box successfully at International level, and the changes needed in training for 3x3's, and some good insights into weight managment for boxers.
Mick Gannon provided a real insight into the English system of progression to International representation and showed the link between England and the Western Counties.
This was followed by Kevin Hay who outlined the rapid rise of Western Counties boxing in less than two years; it was quite amazing what Kevin and his team of coaches have achieved in such a short time!
Mathew Williams contribution clarified the changes for the new coach education programme and we have already received positive feedback. At least many of our coaches now understand the new system .
Kevin Hickey, not yet a week in his new post and he found time to visit and present awards on behalf of Western Counties to Kurt Ernest and Alan Brightman two people he knew many years ago, and who have helped shape not just Western Counties but England amateur boxing as well. Thank you Kevin and I’m sure that you will be pleased to reopen some old friendships and make some new ones.
The question and answer time was interesting and informative and good to have information from 'the horses mouths' !!

What’s New?
There will be many new boxing initiatives in 2009 and to name a couple:
• The return of senior boxing to 3 rounds of 3 minutes.
• A new GB Boxing Performance Programme under the direction of Kevin Hickey, the newly appointed Performance Director, which will have implications for boxers throughout England who have aspirations to box in the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
• The introduction of a new Coach Education Programme throughout the three Home Countries.
The Presentations
Richie Woodhall has had a very successful amateur and professional career and, as boxing commentator he has seen every bout in the last two Olympic Games. Richie has been asked to address two issues in particular:
1. The trends in International Amateur Boxing
a. The impact of a return to 3 rounds of 3 minutes on these trends
b. The impact of the changes on the training, preparation and tactics of boxers
2. Weight Management – views from a professional and amateur career
Mick Gannon has responsibility for the development and preparation of the elite English boxers across the age groups including the rapidly developing women’s boxing. The pathway to English selection is of interest to all boxers and coaches in the West Country and Mick has attended our Squads and selected young boxers for inclusion in England training squads.
On top of all this important work, Mick is responsible for the implementation of the new Coach education Programme which will be rolled out in 2009.
We have asked Mick to address two issues in particular:
1. What are the key requirements for an English boxer?
2. What is the pathway from the West Country to England?
Mathew Williams has the responsibility to manage the National Club Mark Programme and to manage the new ABA Coach Education Programme. Mathew has previously worked for the UK Coaching Commission and has practical experience of the challenges faced by sports trying to update their coach education programme.
Mathew will outline:
1. The changes to the coach education programme
2. The impact upon the new generation of trainee coaches
3. How the boxing coach education programme compares with other sports
Kevin Hay, our Regional coach who has done so much to raise the performance of Western Counties Boxing for both sexes. We’ve asked Kevin to give us his vision of where Western Counties boxing should be in two years time in terms of both Performance and Coach Education. We were disappointed last year that we unable to deliver a coaches conference, especially as the one held in January 07 was such a success and well received, by all. But with your continued support of the squads and the shows being held at the Bristol Sporting Club, we are now in a position to try again.
We are still in the planning stage but, hoping to have Mick Gannon England Coach and Richie Woodhall; Olympic bronze medallist Seoul 1988; WBC Super Middleweight Champion of the World;BBC Boxing Commentator, to present a talk on a range of subjects to include:

Coaching Course October 2008
A coaching course will take place on the weekends of 4th and 5th October and 11th and12th October 2008.
The first weekend (4th/5th) will take place at Exeter University and the second weekend (11th12th) at broadplain Bristol.
There will be Assistant, Full and refresher courses on offer. If you are interested in applying, please download the form to your right of this notice an sent with documents and cheque as soon as possible.
We have as of today 6 places left on the Assistant course, and 4 on the Full. First come first served with necessary CRB checks and 1st aid in place take priority.
There is not as yet another course planned for this season coming, possibly June/July but if there is one it will be in the new VRQ format. See previous postings on coach course changes.

Hi All,
Possibility of running an additional ABA coach course(full not assistant)
Max numbers 14 at Devonport ABC, Plymouth over two weekends in July 12/13 & 19/20 also open to coaches who have already put names down for October if they wish to do it early. If enough interest Kevin Hay is happy to run this additional course.
Ideal time for Devon ,Cornwall, Dorset and Channel Islands to get their refresher done and not have to travel to Bristol. The future refresher course next year I understand is a two day course. This refresher would be valid for 3 years. Places allocated on 1st come 1st served

There has recently been increasing requests for information on workshops, whether it's for child protection courses for welfare officers or equity for clubs preparing to become a club mark accredited club.

The 'coach conferences' which are occasional put on by them are also worth considering, they are directed at all sports, but can have good information and training within them, which as relevant to amateur boxing, as any sport. (e.g. sports psychology, core balance, imagery, sports injury ).

Senior coach guidelines
Kevin Hay thought Western Counties coaches may be interested in the guidelines he has to follow when recommending a coach for the senior coach course.

Senior Coach Course Nomination Guidelines.
A minimum of 2 years must have elapsed since passing the Full ABAE Award.
They must be recommended (signed) by Regional Coach. (The nomination form should then be endorsed by the association secretary)
They must be currently registered and belonging to a ABAE affiliated club.
The regional coach will base his recommendations on the following:
Candidate has shown interest in association programme-attended squads or his/her boxers have attended squads (ideally you know them or know of them-they are suitable and know what is involved. It is not an easy course)
Good grades achieved in the assistant/full ABAE course
She/He wants to work outside of their club and eventually become fully involved in the association programme-Coach education (Courses) and Squad training.
‘Producing’ at his/her club –good standard.
Candidates have spoken to their coach and made them aware of what is involved in the senior course not least of all the amount of paperwork involved in producing three projects between the course and before the assessment. The fact that they are assessed over a weekend Friday-Sunday. He course is rigorous, the assessment is thorough. They will need to be up to speed with as understanding of Physiology, Circuit training, variety of running etc a course and all the practical aspects of Boxing Coaching.
The assessment weekend includes seven theory areas and five practical areas.
Programme: Tues 6am-9am/Wed-Fri 9am-9pm/Sat 9am-11.30am

Senior Coach Course Nomination Guidelines.
A minimum of 2 years must have elapsed since passing the Full ABAE Award.
They must be recommended (signed) by Regional Coach. (The nomination form should then be endorsed by the association secretary)
They must be currently registered and belonging to a ABAE affiliated club.
The regional coach will base his recommendations on the following:
Candidate has shown interest in association programme-attended squads or his/her boxers have attended squads (ideally you know them or know of them-they are suitable and know what is involved. It is not an easy course)
Good grades achieved in the assistant/full ABAE course
She/He wants to work outside of their club and eventually become fully involved in the association programme-Coach education (Courses) and Squad training.
‘Producing’ at his/her club –good standard.
Candidates have spoken to their coach and made them aware of what is involved in the senior course not least of all the amount of paperwork involved in producing three projects between the course and before the assessment. The fact that they are assessed over a weekend Friday-Sunday. He course is rigorous, the assessment is thorough. They will need to be up to speed with as understanding of Physiology, Circuit training, variety of running etc a course and all the practical aspects of Boxing Coaching.
The assessment weekend includes seven theory areas and five practical areas.
Programme: Tues 6am-9am/Wed-Fri 9am-9pm/Sat 9am-11.30am
