What’s New?

There will be many new boxing initiatives in 2009 and to name a couple:
• The return of senior boxing to 3 rounds of 3 minutes.
• A new GB Boxing Performance Programme under the direction of Kevin Hickey, the newly appointed Performance Director, which will have implications for boxers throughout England who have aspirations to box in the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
• The introduction of a new Coach Education Programme throughout the three Home Countries.

The Presentations

Richie Woodhall has had a very successful amateur and professional career and, as boxing commentator he has seen every bout in the last two Olympic Games. Richie has been asked to address two issues in particular:

1. The trends in International Amateur Boxing
a. The impact of a return to 3 rounds of 3 minutes on these trends
b. The impact of the changes on the training, preparation and tactics of boxers

2. Weight Management – views from a professional and amateur career

Mick Gannon has responsibility for the development and preparation of the elite English boxers across the age groups including the rapidly developing women’s boxing. The pathway to English selection is of interest to all boxers and coaches in the West Country and Mick has attended our Squads and selected young boxers for inclusion in England training squads.
On top of all this important work, Mick is responsible for the implementation of the new Coach education Programme which will be rolled out in 2009.
We have asked Mick to address two issues in particular:

1. What are the key requirements for an English boxer?

2. What is the pathway from the West Country to England?

Mathew Williams has the responsibility to manage the National Club Mark Programme and to manage the new ABA Coach Education Programme. Mathew has previously worked for the UK Coaching Commission and has practical experience of the challenges faced by sports trying to update their coach education programme.
Mathew will outline:

1. The changes to the coach education programme

2. The impact upon the new generation of trainee coaches

3. How the boxing coach education programme compares with other sports

Kevin Hay, our Regional coach who has done so much to raise the performance of Western Counties Boxing for both sexes. We’ve asked Kevin to give us his vision of where Western Counties boxing should be in two years time in terms of both Performance and Coach Education. Kevin provides a vital link with both Mick Gannon and Mathew Williams.

Teenagers get a second chance with Dennis Stinchcombe

Bristol sports scheme sets teens straight
Wednesday, October 01, 2008,

A pioneering Bristol sports scheme that has helped young offenders turn their lives around has been held up at the Conservative party conference as a shining example to cut crime.
Youth worker Dennis Stinchcombe told activists at the Birmingham rally that the Second Chance initiative, which runs intensive sports training sessions for convicts, was helping to restore pride in the teenagers.
The boys, aged 15-18, are referred by Ashfield Young Offenders Institute and start with a day-release course in boxing, football coaching and first aid.
Sharing a platform with Helen Newlove, whose husband Garry was killed by teenage thugs, was Shadow Home Secretary Dominic Grieve who set out his vision for stopping crime.
Mr Stinchcombe said the project was in its early days but so far had a good success rate.

"The Second Chance project is about working with young people who are hard to reach and we use sports as a platform to do that," he said.
"So far we have had about a dozen boys go through it and have had a good rate of preventing re-offending.
"We are providing role models for the boys that they might not otherwise have. Let's get some pride back into the country and pride back into young people."
A raft of proposals were announced at the session including support for 'have-a-go' heroes prepared to intervene when they see crimes being committed on the streets and putting 500 officers on the beat by slashing police paperwork.
Changes would also be made to the restrictive health and safety rules that apply to the police and sharia courts would be given no authority over criminal and family law matters.
Shadow Home Secretary Grieve said: "We'll scrap the Whitehall targets that encourage police to pick on soft targets.
"We'll amend the police guidelines so officers back those who use reasonable force to maintain the Queen's peace.
"And we'll ensure that the code for Crown Prosecutors is amended so it is crystal clear that it is not in the 'public interest' to prosecute those who perform a citizen's arrest in good faith."

Western Counties Seminar January 2009

Sunday January 11th 2009.
Please add date to your diaries. We are planning another coaches conference.
We were disappointed last year that we unable to deliver a coaches conference, especially as the one held in January 07 was such a success and well received, by all. But with your continued support of the squads and the shows being held at the Bristol Sporting Club, we are now in a position to try again.
We are still in the planning stage but, hoping to have Mick Gannon England Coach and Richie Woodhall; Olympic bronze medallist Seoul 1988; WBC Super Middleweight Champion of the World;BBC Boxing Commentator, to present a talk on a range of subjects to include:
Nutrition
Weight management
The changes required to adjust to 3x3 rounds

When we have more details we shall add to the blog, but in the mean time keep this day free.

Amateur Boxing Association Guidelines for Women's Boxing

The ABAE Equity Commission
June 2008
1) Introduction:
a) Women have been boxing for centuries and records show that female bouts were taking place in London as early as the 1720s. Mostly, however, bouts confined to fairground booths and street entertainment. At the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis, women's boxing was displayed as an event. Although this signalled some acceptance, progress towards accepting women as boxers remained slow and women were not allowed to compete as amateurs until 1988.
b) The Amateur Boxing Association of England lifted the 116-year ban against women boxing in 1996 and is now fully committed to the development of Women’s Boxing. The world of Amateur Boxing will support, advice and guide providers of Amateur Boxing on how to include and provide for females.
c) Since 1996 Women’s Boxing has been a fast growing sport with opportunities being developed and created for participation and competition. As of March 2008, there were 508 registered female boxers and this is set to grow. Women are also interested in undertaking a variety of roles within Boxing such as officiating, coaching and various other voluntary roles.
d) Due to the fact that Women’s Boxing is relatively new it has and will provide challenges and pose questions. The Amateur Boxing Association of England is committed to ensuring females gain a positive experience in and through Boxing. These guidelines have therefore, been produced to enable providers of Amateur Boxing with information and advice ensuring that women can safely participate and be successful in and through the sport whether it be to gain skills through volunteering, achieve world level success in competition or to gain self esteem, confidence and benefits from excellent dynamic physical activity.
2) Overriding principles:
The Amateur Boxing Association of England is committed to Equality and Child Protection.
a) Equality:
“The ABAE shall ensure that all communities have the opportunity to participate in the sport of amateur boxing and we shall not tolerate discrimination, harassment or other unfair treatment in any form. Systems, procedures and an open culture will be developed to guard against this.”
(Amateur Boxing Association of England Equity Policy)
i) This statement is fundamental to the development of Women’s Boxing. There are many examples, past and present, of clubs / providers / organisations resisting or attempting to prevent women from taking part in Boxing. The ban has been lifted in England, and the Amateur Boxing Association of England is currently going for the third level of the Equality Standard. The commitment is clear that women are to be fully embraced within the provision of boxing at all levels and within all aspects. Discrimination against women will not be tolerated by the Amateur Boxing Association of England.
ii) To achieve equality the Amateur Boxing Association of England has appointed the inaugural National Women’s Boxing Development Manager to support and develop Women’s Boxing including training, awareness and development of clubs.
3) Child Protection:
“It is the responsibility of every adult involved in Amateur Boxing to ensure that every child, young person and adult is able to participate in our sport in a safe and friendly environment. There can be no excuses whatsoever for any form of abuse and all such reported concerns will be rigorously addressed. All within the ABAE should recognise their responsibility to safeguard the welfare of all children, young people and adults by protecting them from all forms of emotional, physical, sexual abuse and neglect. This includes bullying.
a) All children and young people should be valued and treated with equity and fairness. The interests and welfare of children and young people is paramount and they have a right to expect the highest standards of care and this organisation will expect nothing less from those charged with this duty of care and protection regardless of the child’s age, culture, disability, ability, gender, language, racial origin, religious belief or sexual identity.”
(Amateur Boxing Association of England Child Protection Policy and Procedures)
b) The welfare and safeguarding of women and girls is essential. Boxing was traditionally a male dominated environment and as such women and girls can be classed as potentially more vulnerable by low representation. It is essential that all Child Protection Policies and Procedures are executed equally for both genders.
4) Guidelines
a) Inclusion and equal opportunities
i) Women’s Boxing participation has seen a dramatic increase; however women and girls still only comprise of 3.7% of the total boxing population. This is not representative of the general population which comprises of 51% women.
ii) In order to increase participation an ethos of equal opportunities and inclusion is vital. Equal opportunities can only be achieved if the world of boxing do more and act proactively to develop participation. For instance, women who do not currently participate in Boxing have expressed a lack of information and boxing not being seen as a sport that women can participate in as key perceived barriers. Collectively we need to change such perceived barriers by engaging our communities, being open and demonstrating that women and girls can start and develop in the sport.
iii) Many people confuse inclusion and integration. The two can be the same but also different. An integrating boxing scenario provides for everyone in the same way and method. An inclusive boxing scenario puts the needs of participants at the heart of planning and delivery.
iv) Many Boxing Gyms are open to anyone and operate within an integrated environment. Whilst this is extremely positive there may be some females who may find this to be a barrier. To explain this further, two scenarios e.g:
Example 1: A 30 year old woman who is obese and has not taken part in physical activity for some time. This individual may find a male dominated environment intimidating and she is highly likely to be discouraged from attending.
Example 2: A Muslim, 16 year old, female. Due to cultural beliefs this individual may not be allowed to take part in such activity with men present.
v) Given the 2 above examples an integrated boxing scenario will not meet their needs. Their needs may be better met with a different scenario that is inclusive as follows:
Example 1: A 30 year old woman who is obese and has not taken part in physical activity for some time. She is encouraged to join with a friend in a female only introductory course. Once she has gained confidence and improved in her fitness is given the opportunity to join other classes within a Boxing Gym with other women she has been training with.
Example 2: A Muslim, 16 year old, female. A female boxing coach from the club provides a weekly female only session at the club or in a community centre.
vi) There is no one size fits all answer with inclusion however; the golden rule of considering the individual needs and backgrounds of women and girls and catering for their circumstances is inclusive.
vii) We also appreciate that not all Boxing Gyms have the physical and operational capacity to provide fully inclusive activity and may start with an integrated approach but we hope that Boxing Gyms will work towards such an inclusive ethos.
b) Welfare and safeguarding:
i) This document should be read in line with the Amateur Boxing Association of England Child Protection Policy and Procedures and ensure that all aspects apply within the policy and procedures for male and females. Some specific aspects have been included in these guidelines to provide more detail:
ii) Physical contact as a means of demonstrative coaching is often used by coaches. This method can still be applied so long as the following is considered:
(1) Can other coaching tools be used such as videos, verbal explanation, demonstration, diagrams, and mannequins.
(2) Inform / ask the participant.
(3) Carefully position hands and only on body parts that are appropriate e.g. legs
(4) Ensure you can be seen by others e.g. coaches, spectators, parents
(5) Is a female chaperone present in the gym?
iii) Boxing by nature is a weight controlled sport. This has many advantages if the approach is for health related reasons. However, it is important to also consider the sensitivity related to someone’s weight. Eating disorders are a serious mental illness affecting 1.1 million people in the UK. beat[1] provides helplines for adults and young people, online support and a UK-wide network of self-help groups to help people beat their eating disorder. Actions, even if not meant in a malicious way, around someone’s weight can have an affect on someone’s perception of their weight even if they are not overweight in any way. For instance a coach joking with a boxer saying “Fatty, you need to lose some of that puppy fat to make the weight” or saying “you are looking a bit heavy”. It is essential that a coach considers how they approach a female boxer’s weight sensitively and positively.
iv) There are guidelines within the Child Protection Policy and Procedures on weigh ins. Women and girls must be safeguarded within the context of a weigh in and the following guidelines be applied:
(1) Like children, women and girls should be weighed in at separate times to men or in a separate area.
(2) Female chaperones should be provided.
(3) If possible those individuals who need to be present should be female and if this is not possible due to a shortage of females any males unfulfilling roles should not be present.
(4) Boxers should be told in advance to wear a swimsuit or tank top and shorts, rather than underwear.
v) The Travel Safe with Children guidelines should be observed for females. Key points being:
(1) General Staffing Rules - Where there are female athletes then at least one female supervisor should be present and similarly.
(2) Male coaches should not be taking female athletes to tournaments or events on their own without a female chaperone. However, this is not a reason to prevent a female from competing. Clubs should consider solutions to finding a chaperone whether it be a family member of the athlete or a female volunteer in the club.
c) Safety in Boxing
i) Some people mistakenly perceive amateur boxing as a 'dangerous sport', Medical research and data shows a completely different story. Amateur boxing goes to great lengths to protect its athletes. Women amateur boxers must wear a mouth guard at all times, wear protective hand bandages, force absorbent head gear and a shirt to absorb sweat. Women boxers are also recommended to wear breast protectors and crotch protectors.
ii) Female boxers must bring a signed Pregnancy Declaration to the first medical examination at a tournament, declaring that she is not pregnant. The declaration must be maximum 14 days old when signed.
iii) Suppliers of women’s boxing safety equipment include:
(1) TOP Ten (http://www.toptencanada.com/store/shopping.php?category=1&sub=21)

Sports Bra with Inserts Description: The 'cool' choice for active women. Flexible plastic inserts in different sizes increase comfort while providing support and protection.

d) Clothing:
i) Women and girls often have longer hair than men. Hair should be tied back or warm in a bandana, head scarf or hairnet to ensure hair does not impair the vision of the individual or their opponent in competition or training.
ii) Women and girls should dress appropriately for training, in non-revealing clothing and clothing that enables them to train comfortably and safely.
5) Being a Female Friendly Club / Provider
a) We understand that clubs and providers may not be fully female friendly; however it is essential that all clubs and providers cater for women boxing and as such clubs and providers need to work towards being female friendly. Below is a list of tips on being / becoming female friendly. Remember, if you require support with any of these factors you can contact the National Women’s Boxing Development Manager.
i) Positive publicity including images of women boxing. Distributing posters and leaflets in outlets that are female focused e.g. girls’ schools, women’s centres, guides and brownies.
ii) Positive images within the boxing environment and recognition of the successes of women boxers.
iii) Weekly female only sessions or an introductory female course of so many weeks
iv) Mixed gender sessions where appropriate
v) Female chaperones and supervisors within the boxing environment
vi) Female coach(s)
vii) Female changing and toilet facilities
viii)Information readily available including other opportunities, welfare officer, grants and safety equipment
ix) Link with other clubs for female sparring sessions regularly
x) Match making to enable women to compete and develop
6) Tournament Information
a) A domestic competitive structure for women and girls exists, and clubs are encouraged to enter female boxers, once they have received their medical card and they are deemed ready by their coach to compete.

Workshops in the South West

There has recently been increasing requests for information on workshops, whether it's for child protection courses for welfare officers or equity for clubs preparing to become a club mark accredited club.
The link for courses in the South West are below. The various sports partnerships in your own counties are the providers. The 'coach conferences' which are occasional put on by them are also worth considering, they are directed at all sports, but can have good information and training within them, which as relevant to amateur boxing, as any sport. (e.g. sports psychology, core balance, imagery, sports injury ).

Senior coach guidelines

Kevin Hay thought Western Counties coaches may be interested in the guidelines he has to follow when recommending a coach for the senior coach course.
If you are still interested after reading the following you know how to contact him!
devonportabc@aol.com

Senior Coach Course Nomination Guidelines.

A minimum of 2 years must have elapsed since passing the Full ABAE Award.
They must be recommended (signed) by Regional Coach. (The nomination form should then be endorsed by the association secretary)
They must be currently registered and belonging to a ABAE affiliated club.

The regional coach will base his recommendations on the following:

Candidate has shown interest in association programme-attended squads or his/her boxers have attended squads (ideally you know them or know of them-they are suitable and know what is involved. It is not an easy course)
Good grades achieved in the assistant/full ABAE course
She/He wants to work outside of their club and eventually become fully involved in the association programme-Coach education (Courses) and Squad training.
‘Producing’ at his/her club –good standard.
Candidates have spoken to their coach and made them aware of what is involved in the senior course not least of all the amount of paperwork involved in producing three projects between the course and before the assessment. The fact that they are assessed over a weekend Friday-Sunday. He course is rigorous, the assessment is thorough. They will need to be up to speed with as understanding of Physiology, Circuit training, variety of running etc a course and all the practical aspects of Boxing Coaching.
The assessment weekend includes seven theory areas and five practical areas.
Programme: Tues 6am-9am/Wed-Fri 9am-9pm/Sat 9am-11.30am

There is a fee for both the course and the assessment weekend.

New Coaching structure

An update on the changing face of coach education. from Kevin Hay Regional Coach, for Western Counties
Education and training
ABAE Coach Education and Assessment programme - update, May 2008.
Getting into line with the National Standards for Coaching, Coach Education and Assessment
The ABAE Coach Education programme is being revised to bring it in line with the National Standards, both for Coaching and for Tutoring and Assessing Coach Education Courses. This is one of the objectives set out in the Whole Sport Plan and agreed with Sport England and SportsCoachUK (scUK). All National Governing Bodies of sport have undertaken this process.

The UK Coaching Framework
Amateur Boxing is now one of 29 key sports who have signed up to the new UK Coaching Framework (UKCF) and has been classified as a 'Delivery 1' sport. This means that Amateur Boxing, for the first time, has access to dedicated officer and financial support from the key agencies, such as Sport England, SkillsActiveUK and scUk in implementing the new Coaching Awards.
As part of the UKCF we are reviewing the content, assessment process and delivery mechanisms. We need to offer a high quality 'state of the art' service to the hundreds of volunteer coaches who are already in the system and to those new coaches we need if the vision for our sport set out in our development plans is to be realised.

Home Country Cooperation
The ABAE are also working in partnership with Scotland (ABS) and Wales (WABA), as part of the UKCF, to fulfil the criteria for inclusion in the UKCoaching Certificate (UKCC). scUK are currently revising the criteria for UKCC recognition and the ABAE, WABA and ABS will be following the new pathway specifications being mapped out.

The new Awards, Vocationally Related Qualifications (VRQ)

VRQ Level 1
Following consultation with the Coaching Commission and scUK, the ABAE Board and English Council agreed that the first priority for the new coaching system is a new VRQ Level 1 (Assistant Coach) Award. This new qualification will be delivered and assessed over 26 hours (2 weekends) and is the entry route into coaching the competitive sport. Candidates MUST be nominated by an affiliated Amateur Club.
VRQ Level 2
The new Full Coach qualification. (60 hours pre-course work, home study, tutoring and assessment) which has been developed at VRQ Level 2, is an essential requirement for running a club, identifying and developing talent and will be the bedrock of the ABAE's Coaching programme.
VRQ Level 3
The new Senior Coach Award has now been mapped against the National Standards and the content is being developed. This new award will focus on talent identification and medium term performance planning and periodisation. A new sport science base is being developed for all the ABAE's awards but a high level of knowledge and understanding of coaching theory, skill learning and development is vital at the Level 3. This award will also focus on more advanced conditioning techniques specific to Amateur Boxing. Potential Level 3 Coaches will be identified at regional level and invited to apply for training and accreditation.
VRQ Level 4
The new Advanced Coach Award is still in preparation. The national standards for coach education at this level have not yet been finalised and so the mapping which has been done at Levels 1, 2 and 3 has not yet been possible.
The ABAE Coaching Resource Pack
As part of the revision of the ABAE Coaching Awards we are producing a comprehensive pack of resource materials, including a DVD, covering skill learning, conditioning and coaching practice. The support materials will be provided for every new applicant and ABAE Coaches who are accredited and on the ABAE Coaching Database.

Units of the resource pack which have already been developed are:
Statement of Ethics and Equity adopted by the ABAE
Safety in Amateur Boxing - the research evidence and good practice
The Role of the Coach in Amateur Boxing
Planning and Practice in coaching, gym management, and competition
Effective Communication - getting the message across
Teaching the Punches and Defences related to age and ability levels
Generic Principles of Training applied to Amateur Boxing
Conditioning for Amateur Boxing (Resistance Training, Gym Work, Running, warm-ups and cool down procedures and static and developmental stretches)
Nutrition and Hydration
Coaching Children
Long Term Athlete Development, the basic principles.
Amateur Boxing in context - community development and the education sector
The ABAE Incentive Award Scheme

The ABAE Coaching system
These elements will be the core of the Resource Pack. More will be added, especially to cover periodisation and long term performance planning, the bio-mechanics of boxing, advanced conditioning techniques, tactical planning for competition, decision making in the bout and the application of the ABAE's athlete development model.
Qualified Coach Educators
One of the most important areas of the UK Coaching Framework is the formal training and accreditation of those who educate and assess coaches. Within the next 2 years the ABAE will move towards the establishment of a National Coach Educator and Assessor 'Faculty' consisting of coaches who have been accredited through the Certificate in Tutoring Sport (CTS) and Introduction to Assessment Practice in Sport (IAPS). In the interim all accredited ABAE Coaches graded at Levels 3 and 4 will be offered the opportunity to apply for a place on CTS and IAPS accreditation courses. Priority will be given to existing p/t Regional Coaches.
The existing system and moving from the 'old' to the 'new' Award structure
While the process of developing the new awards and accrediting the coach educators is continuing, the existing coach education system will remain in effect. This will mean that the Full Coach qualification (Parts 1 and 2) will continue to be delivered at regional level and Senior and Advanced Coaches will be trained and assessed on a national basis.
Those coaches who hold ABAE qualifications which are up to date and who are on the ABAE coaching database will be offered a 'bridge' into the new system which will consist of a one day 'refresher' workshop delivered in regions where they will be provided with the new ABAE Coaching Resource Pack.
Timelines
The new Award structure will be implemented gradually during 2008 and 9.
The new Level 1 Course syllabus will be confirmed by the Coaching Commission on June 7th 2008 and rolled out in the autumn of this year. The first Pilot of the new course will take place in London in late August 2008 and will be led by English National Coach, Mick Gannon.
All new candidates for Assistant Coach grading will be trained to the National Standard for Coaching, VRQ Level 1, as part of the UK Coaching Framework from November 2008 onwards and the new VRQ Level 2 (Full Coach) syllabus will be piloted in November 2008 and implemented from March 2009.
Further updates on the roll out of the new ABAE Coaching Awards will be available on the website as information becomes available. For more information visit SportsCoach UK

Possible new base for courses and squads in Exeter

This circular is being sent to all Boxing Contacts in the South West and is particularly pertinent to those who operate in:
Devon,
Cornwall and Dorset
There is now an opportunity to establish a “Boxing Centre” on the Campus of St Luke’s College, Exeter University.
The Centre could provide:
Recreational boxing opportunities for Exeter University Students
Recreational boxing opportunities for the wider community in and around Exeter
A focal point for:
Regional squad training for the South of our massive South West geographic area
An education centre to deliver boxing to potential teachers
An education centre for the delivery of ABA Tutor Awards, Coach Education Courses etc
A centre for the development and coordination of school-club link programmes.
A possible venue for Exeter Boxing Clubs.

Steve Brooks, our Regional Association Secretary and I will be in attendance together with Bill Hart the St Luke’s College Sports Officer: Kevin Hay, our Regional Coach will also be coming up from Plymouth to review the facilities and the potential to develop a strong presence in Exeter.

3.00pm – 5.00pm on Thursday 16th May

We have some great opportunities to develop both competitive and recreational boxing in the Southern part of the Western Counties. In particular, Stuart Lord, the OCRA Activity Development Manager, at the Okehampton Community College is anxious to form a School-Club contact as soon as possible. This would be along the lines of the very successful link established by Gary Cave in Bristol in the last couple of months.
Boxing Clubs can extend their programmes into some of the schools and we could put together the outline at this meeting.
Steve and I look forward to meeting with clubs, friends, and new contacts to promote some rapid development “in the South”.

If you are able to attend – please e-mail me

If you are not able to attend but would like further information – e-mail me
Look forward to seeing many of you,
Best wishes,

Womens Championships 2008

Both the junior finals and the senior semi finals and finals will take place on June 21st 2008 at:
The Army Boxing Centre Maida Gym Queens Avenue Aldershot GU11 2BT
We have 4 entries from Western Counties this year.
Shauna Eva (Exeter) will have a semi final against C Shield (Lawrence)
Tinika Penforld (Tivey) will have a semi final against C Brown (Hamer)
D Leaney (Saints) will have a final with either C Allinson (Aycliffe) or R Murray (Birmingham City)

So Western Counties have been unlucky in drawing a semi prior to the finals for three girls out of four, but sure they will use the semi's as there warm up to the grand final !
